Processed foods: How to make a healthy choice.

What is Processed Food?

Processed foods refer to any food item that has undergone a series of mechanical or chemical operations to alter or preserve it. Processing can range from simple methods like freezing or canning to more complex procedures involving the addition of various ingredients. Here are some common types of processed foods:

  • Canned Foods: Fruits, vegetables, soups, and meats preserved in metal cans, typically through heat treatment.

  • Frozen Foods: Vegetables, fruits, and ready-to-eat meals that have been frozen to extend their shelf life.

  • Packaged Snacks: Chips, crackers, cookies, and other snacks that are often pre-packaged and ready for consumption.

  • Bakery Products: Bread, pastries, cakes, and other baked goods produced using refined flours and added preservatives.

  • Breakfast Cereals: Processed and often fortified with vitamins and minerals, ready for quick consumption.

  • Dairy Products: Processed cheeses, yogurt, and flavored milk with added sweeteners or flavorings.

  • Processed Meats: Bacon, sausages, deli meats, and other meat products undergoing curing, smoking, or other processes.

  • Ready-to-Eat Meals: Frozen or packaged meals pre-cooked and designed for quick and convenient consumption.

  • Canned Soups: Soups that are pre-cooked, canned, and often have added preservatives for longer shelf life.

  • Condiments and Sauces: Ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressings, and other condiments undergoing processing for flavor enhancement and preservation.

  • Soft Drinks and Beverages: Carbonated and non-carbonated drinks often containing added sugars, flavors, and preservatives.

  • Instant Noodles and Pasta: Quick-cooking noodles and pasta products often pre-flavored and packaged.

  • Frozen Pizza and Snack Foods: Pre-made pizzas and snack foods that are frozen for quick preparation.

  • Desserts and Sweets: Processed desserts such as ice cream, candies, and pastries.

It's important to note that not all processed foods are unhealthy, and some processed items can be part of a balanced diet. However, it's advisable to be mindful of the ingredients, additives, and nutritional content of processed foods, as some may be high in salt, sugar, or unhealthy fats. Opting for minimally processed or whole foods is generally considered a healthier choice.

Processed Foods to Watch Out For:

  1. Highly Processed Foods:
    • Foods that have undergone extensive processing, often involving the addition of preservatives, sweeteners, and other additives.
    • Examples include packaged snacks, breakfast cereals, and many convenience foods.
  2. Ultra-Processed Foods:
    • Foods that have undergone substantial industrial processing, often containing multiple ingredients, additives, and flavorings.
    • Examples include soft drinks, frozen meals, and many ready-to-eat snacks.

Why Are Processed Foods Unhealthy?

Processed foods often contain a variety of ingredients, and their health impact can depend on factors like overall diet, portion sizes, and individual health conditions. However, some commonly identified unhealthy ingredients found in processed foods include:

  1. Trans Fats:

    • Artificially created fats that can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and lower good cholesterol (HDL) levels.
    • Often found in partially hydrogenated oils and some fried and baked goods.
  2. Added Sugars:

    • Excessive sugar consumption is linked to various health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
    • Watch out for different names for added sugars on ingredient lists, such as high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, and glucose.
  3. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS):

    • A sweetener commonly used in processed foods and sugary beverages.
    • Excessive consumption may contribute to obesity and metabolic issues.
  4. Artificial Sweeteners:

    • Some artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose, have been linked to controversial health concerns.
    • It's essential to be cautious and moderate their intake.
  5. Sodium (Salt):

    • High sodium intake is associated with high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease.
    • Processed foods, especially canned soups, snacks, and fast food, often contain high levels of sodium.
  6. Preservatives:

    • Certain preservatives, such as sodium nitrate/nitrite, BHA (butylated hydroxy anisole), and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), have been studied for potential health risks.
    • Often added to processed meats and some snack foods.
  7. Artificial Colors and Flavors:

    • Some artificial colors and flavors have been associated with hyperactivity in children and may have other health implications.
    • Natural alternatives are often considered safer.
  8. Refined Grains:

    • Processed foods often contain refined grains, which have had the nutritious bran and germ removed.
    • This results in a loss of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Look for whole grains instead.
  9. Hydrogenated Oils:

    • These oils contain trans fats, which can contribute to heart disease.
    • Food labels may now list "partially hydrogenated oils," but it's essential to check for this ingredient.
  10. MSG (Monosodium Glutamate):

    • While the FDA considers MSG safe for most people, some individuals may be sensitive to it and experience symptoms like headaches or nausea.
    • Commonly found in processed foods, especially savory snacks.

Making life more balanced and meaningful

I am writing this blog after a long hiatus with the purpose of educating myself. I have been contemplating making my life more meaningful and balanced, rather than just passing my time. I thought I should write a blog to guide myself on what is more important and how to give direction to my life.

Life is not just about achieving success or any task; it's a journey full of exploration, a journey with diverse experiences that should be embraced daily. We waste a good chunk of our lives focusing on materialistic goals, essentially pushing our leisure for tomorrow. We are not in a race; there's nothing to achieve in life. Each day should be balanced and filled with diversity. Daily, we should strive for a balanced approach to life. Everything in a day should make it appear very fulfilling and meaningful. We can even segment our day: 8 hours to work, 8 hours to sleep, and 8 hours to leisure. There can be some variations, but any major variations will make us forgo the true meaning of this journey of life, which is about enjoying everything under the sun. We should focus on the following on a daily basis.

Health & Hygiene: Prioritize regular exercise to boost physical and mental well-being. Maintain a balanced diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Ensure sufficient, quality sleep for overall health and energy. Limit processed foods and sugary drinks. Practice good hygiene.

Mental and Physical Fitness: Incorporate stretching, yoga, or exercise into your routine to keep the body flexible and joints functional. Engage in some form of sports or cardio for overall well-being. Embrace meditation and Pranayama for mental well-being, or spend time in silence with oneself.

Learning: Dedicate approximately 8 hours to professional goals. As part of leisure, try to learn something new daily, whether through reading books, magazines, newspapers, or watching educational videos or experiential learning. Recognize that intellectual growth is crucial in life.

Leisure: Cultivate a daily hobby, such as gardening, cooking, music, reading, dancing, physical fitness, painting, or photography. Hobbies can be creative, intellectual, fitness, or skill-driven and should contribute to relaxation and personal growth. Additionally, foster positive relationships and social connections for emotional support.

If you strive for balance, you will achieve meaningful growth in life. Remember, growth is not just about success; it's intellectual growth, emotional growth, mental growth. This will come through a balance of leisure, fitness, learning, and nurturing relationships in life. We don’t live to achieve something; "we just simply live."

Happiness

As a young bud
Unenlightened to goals & achievement
Immune from hatred & greed
I could reap joy
In whatever little
Life offered to me

As time goes by
The ignorant becomes wordly-wise
The wise pursue happiness
In success & glory
In matter & material
In senses & ego

Happiness becomes a zero sum game
Earn it or snatch it
It transforms into an object
Score it or loose it

Can a indoctrinated mind
Chasing success
Overburdened by desires
Exhausted to worries
Create joyful memories

Sometimes I feel
Ignorance was better than wisdom
For Happiness afore
was unconditional
Neither comparative nor relative
It lied in the most insignificant
Simple and little things

It is time to stop
Look back  & re-think
What happiness is

Happiness is a feeling
of eternal bliss
Satisfaction
And peace of mind
It gushes from inside
Spreading a positive aura outside

Happiness breeds & prosper
When the mind is contended
Heart is pure
And soul is free

It is then
The egoist becomes humble
The greedy becomes kind
And hatred turns into love

Let humans become more humane
Let happiness become a way of life
Let us together
Grow and prosper
Bringing smile to each other’s face

Childhood Memories

Especially for late 80's and early 90's born

Born to a middle class family
Watching how it is woven
In a thread of silent sacrifices
Made each day and every moment
These Sacrifices are not made out of force
Nor with a feeling of martyrdom
They emerge out of sheer love and affection
Without any expectation of return

Undaunted Bravehearts

All of us have some good and bad experiences in life. This piece of writing is dedicated to one such incident.

I want you to take me to the beach
Walk with me hand in hand
Look into my eyes
Come closer to me so that I can feel your breath
Put your hands on my waist and look at me
The emotions I can feel is beyond all happiness
Nothing can match the warmth of true love
The tears are pouring down my eyes
Coz I have waited for this day for so long
Don’t wipe them off, let them come out
And why are your eyes so moist
I know how deeply you feel for me
We don’t need words to express our feeling

I consider myself lucky
for I have you
Who can bear my mood swings
Cater to my tantrums
Understand my emotions
Laugh on my stupid jokes
Make silent sacrifices
And always treat me so special

Service & Cadre Preferences

1)    Things to keep in mind while filling your DAF

1.       DAF is not like your resume, the more achievements the more you will score. Here DAF is only a way to know about you so that they can ask questions.
2.       Please do not try to fake or write for the sake of writing. If there is no achievement, then don’t create one, no hobby then don’t write fake one .
3.       Be specific. For you music might be a hobby (listening in free time), but they will expect you to know about music in detail. . You might like cooking but they will ask you anything related to cooking ( about preservatives, masalas, cooking recepies, types of cuisines etc).So better to avoid writing such open ended things. Write specific things which you know you can prepare.a
4.       Writing something and not able to answer basic questions related to those things sends a very wrong impression. When you are filling DAF ensure you write less but meaningful things you are confident about.
